Captain’s Prize - Co. Louth Golf Club, Baltray

9 Apr 2026
General

What a day for Capt Stephen McGee's OC’00 passing out parade. We had everything, pelting rain and gale force winds to start, sun cream midway, and undoubtedly the wettest we’ve ever got in 1.5 seconds on the back nine. The timesheet was full with 60 OC’s spanning 61 years (1959 to 2020) which was fantastic.

To the winners:

  • The Captain’s Prize was secured by Peter Gallagher OC‘98 with an incredible 38 points given the extreme weather conditions.

The other very worthy winners of the various silver and shiny cups competed for on Captain’s Day were:

  • Golfer of the Year for the Robert Walshe Cup was claimed with very little fuss by the ultra consistent and very deserving Patrick Joy OC’69. He’s on the wise owl council and is a great friend of the golfing society so we were delighted to see him come in for a great prize. Big congrats Patrick. Great golf all season.
  • James Kelly OC’80 was a gallant winner of the Crosbie O’Sullivan Cup (our Sam Maguire lookalike) awarded to those out more than 20 years and our effective second prize on the day.
  • Ned McQuaid OC'77 took the Tom Menton Cup (for those out more than 30 years).
  • Finally our winner of the George F Crosbie Seniors Cup (for those out more than 50 years) was Tom Tyrrell OC’72.

This is an August (now 6 times a year) gathering and we celebrate in particular the ‘wise owls’. They’re out more than 50 years and have backboned the society for a very long time. To see two wise owls in the major prizes on Captains day is frankly very special and a testament to their good health and endurance. Well done to all the wise owls. You’re very precious to this society. And we couldn’t finish this email without special mention to Niall O’Neill OC ‘59 who won the outfit of the day. Keep an eye out for it on the Union website!

Massive thanks to Stephen McGee for his captaincy and great efforts. He has been an untiring help to the golfing society. Commendations to his year of 2000 who have been great supporters of Stephen and the golfing society and are a collection of fine (young-ish!) men. And to David Clavin, Capt 2025-26 out of that 2000 fold too, we wish him a super year of captaincy and have no doubt he too will be supported in his endeavours. Thanks also to Mike Stafford for our years supply of whiskey and to Owen Binchy for reviewing the accounts. Much appreciated lads. Onward to Galway in October.
