The Sir Abraham Sutton Cup, Portmarnock GC, Friday 3 May

General

For those of you not yet in the know, Sir Abraham Sutton was elected Union President in May1920 and generously donated a beautiful cup to kick start interest in an OC golfing society. The inaugural society meeting was convened in October 1920 and four events were approved. Thirty OC’s contested for his cup in May 1921 at Portmarnock GC and the tradition lives on. The efforts of Sir Abraham Sutton in the formation and administration of this august golfing society are laudable. Credit also to all past winners who have polished and cared for this coveted prize for over 100 years.

Back to the present. Sixty highly skilled competitors rose to the championship challenge at Portmarnock GC and battled for this great piece of silverware. Conditions were sublime and the course was in top class condition. All of this clearly favoured the winner, Aidan Proctor Fitzsimons (‘00), who carded an incredible 58 points on the day. It was quite the score and will stand the test of time. Joe Bruton ('71) was second with 45 points and Patrick Joy ('69) was third with 42 points. Very fine scoring indeed.

We were later treated to a sumptuous dinner and hats off to the catering team for looking after us so well. A special thanks too to Tom Coghlan (‘90) who is the current captain of Portmarnock GC and was of great assistance in the lead up to the day.

Pictured below is a group photo of the class of 2000 (L-R: Mark Feighery, Conor Matthews, Ivan Feran, Derry McKeown, Aidan Proctor, David Clavin, Stephen McGee and Michael Stafford). A nice memory.

Onward to The Royal County Down GC.
