The Union and Berkeley Street
In late 2013 the Union agreed to support a new initiative of the Fr Peter McVerry Trust (PMVT) with capital and volunteers.
Recognising that their homeless clients often had few places to go during the day and in the early evening the PMVT wish to provide a location where they can socialise and perhaps partake in some on-line learning.
With a suitable premises in Berkeley St already in their possession, they were seeking a partner who could help them fund the conversion of the ground floor into a café with internet and computer facilities for their clients, and who could provide some volunteers in the evening to supplement their own staff and so enable the facility to be open from 9 am until 9 pm.
With funds having become available after the closure of the Clongowes Youth Club, the Union was in a position to offer the capital support required. In addition, a request for volunteers was launched at the Union Dinner in January 2014, and over 40 OCs stepped forward to offer their time.
The project got under way in November 2014, and the café opened in early April 2015
If anybody is interested in helping out at the café to contact me on firstname.lastname@example.org or 086 8098165 – volunteers are always welcome.
