30th March 2021
Dear Fellow Clongownians,
As we enter our second year of Covid 19 restrictions, which has resulted in the cancellation, yet again, of the Annual Easter Retreat, I thought a message from your Union might be appropriate.
While your Union committee have not had the opportunity to meet each other face to face due to restrictions, we nevertheless have been working together through zoom meetings to bring forward our three-year plan which is moving steadily along.
Part of this plan is to update our database and I am glad to report that the committee of Barry Bowen, Dan O’Leary and Shane Dowling have received many replies to the questionnaire sent out last month with specific emphasis on those that left Clongowes in the past twenty years. It will be a massive advantage to the Union to have access to these email addresses and mobile numbers for circulating information about proposed Union events.
To keep Union members informed of happenings we propose creating a Newsletter. The contents will include dates for reunions, dinners, golf outings etc. Please keep the Union office [email@example.com) informed of any event planned over the next 12 months and we will include it in our Newsletter publication.
While uncertain of the future, we have reserved the Marker Hotel for our Business Lunch scheduled for Friday October 15th and we will keep you informed in due course. Also, we are working on dates and venue for the 2022 Annual Dinner. This will coincide with the opening game of next year’s Six Nations. This year is the centenary of the Sir Abraham Sutton Cup, and we expect to have details of this event shortly.
Your Union has agreed to sponsor some form of get-together for last year’s Senior Cup Team , where they will be presented with their medals. A date and venue is to be agreed by Leinster Rugby and by the College. We would hope to make this presentation in the RDS. Unfortunately, I cannot be more specific with dates as I am sure you can understand, but we will keep you informed as we progress.
One date that I can confirm is Sunday May 23rd for our AGM. This would have been Union Day but not unfortunately this year. Details for our zoom AGM will be sent nearer the date.
On Good Friday, 2nd April, Clongowes will be hosting a virtual Way of the Cross from the Boys Chapel. This can be accessed via the College website [www.clongowes.net) from 3pm onwards and will be available to view anytime over the Easter weekend. This year the soundtrack for The Way of The Cross has been recorded and filmed “live” with performances from the renowned Irish soprano Celine Byrne and cellist Jane Hughes along with the senior members of the Schola.
May I take this opportunity of wishing you all a peaceful Easter. On the Union’s behalf I would like to thank Fr. Michael Sheil for his monthly pastoral email and the screening of Sunday Mass over the past number of weeks. Both brought home our close attachment to the school and its ethos.
With every good wish
President Paul Maher OC’61
Hon Secretary Shane Dowling OC’83
