Saturday’s dramatic conclusion to the CWC major golf season in Baltray will live long in the memory of David Pigot. With heavy showers and blustery winds buffeting the famous Co Louth links David doggedly set about the task of building his winning score. While the writer of this email recalls seeing the newly crowned Golfer of the Year hacking his ball all over the heavy rough along the right hand side of the 3rd hole, this sight proved to be an aberration and not a sign of things to come. It is probably safe to assume that playing partners Ned McQuaid and Ambrose O’Sullivan would have done their utmost to upset the victor but he was not to be denied and like all true champions, David saved his best stuff for the back nine on the final day of the season. David’s 35 point total was enough to see off the challenge of incoming captain Andrew Buckley who also had 35 points with an inferior back nine. In a gracious victory speech David acknowledged the contribution of playing partner Tony Tynan whose smooth swing served as sound instruction on how to conquer the elements. Well done to David on what was a very consistent year’s golf.
Outgoing captain Rob Walshe (who incidentally shot the best score on the day) rounded the day off with a review of the CWC golfing year following dinner and notified us that Andrew Buckley had accepted the nomination to captain the society in 2018. Rob noted the strong attendance for the RCD event and welcomed the growing participation levels of younger members of the society.
The conclusion of the event in Baltray brings the curtain down on the 2017 CWC majors season. Thank you to everyone for your support during the year.
